CrowdHealth Announces Appointment of Avik Roy to Board of Directors

Roy will develop Clinical Advisory Board for community-powered alternative to health insurance

CrowdHealth, a company providing a revolutionary way of paying for healthcare bills through crowdfunding, today announced the appointment of Avik Roy to the CrowdHealth Board of Directors, effective immediately. Roy will also lead CrowdHealth’s development of a Clinical Advisory Board as it positions itself as America’s leading alternative to traditional health insurance.

"We are honored to welcome Avik to the Board," said Andy Schoonover, Chief Executive Officer of CrowdHealth. "Avik is one of the most respected voices in healthcare policy at the state and federal levels. In addition to incorporating his wisdom into our growth and regulatory strategy, Avik is leading our efforts to develop a world class Clinical Advisory Board to ensure our members have access to the leading healthcare technologies and practices."

CrowdHealth, an app-based technology platform with a set of tools that enable people to fund their healthcare expenses outside the traditional health insurance system, announced in September a $6 million investment round, led by Next Coast Ventures and Activate Venture Partners. The company offers membership plans funded by individuals who pay physicians directly for healthcare at pre-negotiated rates, significantly reducing their out-of-pocket expenses when compared to healthcare.gov plans.

“I’m excited to join CrowdHealth’s Board of Directors and lead the development of its Clinical Advisory Board,” said Roy, president of the Foundation for Research on Equal Opportunity (FREOPP), a non-profit think tank focused on expanding economic opportunity to those who least have it. “I've dedicated my life to helping every American afford healthcare, and I look forward to using my experience in health policy to advance CrowdHealth's mission to reimagine the healthcare payment system and empower doctors to direct care choices."

In addition to his work at FREOPP, Roy is a prolific writer. He serves as the Policy Editor at Forbes, where he writes on politics and policy. He has advised three presidential candidates on healthcare policy. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he studied molecular biology, and the Yale University School of Medicine.
