We are now looking for a Staff Data Engineer to bring precision, improved productivity, and excellence to that mission.

The Role

The Staff Data Engineer is a Senior level individual contributor who will eventually own the technical strategy and execution of our data platform.

Today, our data lives primarily in PostgreSQL across several services, with operational data flowing through Stripe, Klaviyo, PostHog, Zendesk, and other tools. We answer questions by querying copies of production or stitching together exports. That works for now, but it won't scale with where we're going: more members, more product surfaces, more AI-driven workflows, and a growing appetite across the company for trustworthy answers to harder questions.

You'll come in and start building. As you learn our stack and where the business is headed, you'll help us see what we actually need and what we don't. The first year is about standing up a real analytical foundation - warehouse or lakehouse, ingestion and transformation. Bigger questions will need to be answered: ML infrastructure for our AI agents, real-time data for product experiences, a data lake if and when we genuinely need one.

What You’ll Do

  • Assess our current data landscape and propose a pragmatic roadmap - what to build, what to buy, what to defer
  • Take ownership of current day-to-day data engineering responsibilities – ensuring data is moving and processes are executing as expected, and fixing things if they break 
  • Stand up our first real analytical platform (warehouse, lakehouse, or extended Postgres - you tell us which and why)
  • Build ingestion from our core sources: PostgreSQL, Stripe, Klaviyo, PostHog, Zendesk, and more
  • Design and build data models that answer the questions the business actually has
  • Establish data quality, testing, and observability practices so people can trust what they query
  • Partner with engineering on operational data concerns: CDC, event schemas, PHI handling, audit trails
  • Lay the groundwork for our ML and AI data needs as our agentic product work expands
  • Set the technical standards and culture for data work at CrowdHealth - code review, documentation, testing

What We're Looking For:

Required:

  • Expert SQL - query optimization, window functions, indexing, reading query plans
  • Deep PostgreSQL - JSONB, partitioning, extensions, replication
  • Strong Python - production-quality code, pandas/polars, testing
  • Dbt or equivalent transformation framework
  • At least one major data warehouse or lakehouse (Databricks, Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift)
  • An orchestrator (Airflow, Dagster, Prefect, or similar)
  • AWS (S3, IAM, RDS, ECS, Lambda) - or equivalent depth in another major cloud
  • Git, CI/CD, and modern software engineering practices

Strongly Preferred:

  • Ingestion tooling (Fivetran, Airbyte, Debezium, or hand-rolled extractors)
  • Infrastructure as code (Pulumi, Terraform)
  • BI tool experience (Metabase, Hex, Lightdash, Looker, or similar)
  • Data quality tooling (dbt tests, Great Expectations, Soda, Monte Carlo)
  • Experience modeling data for finance, ops, or compliance stakeholders

Bonus

  • Healthcare data and HIPAA/PHI handling
  • Payments data - Stripe, ACH, reconciliation patterns
  • ML/AI data infrastructure - vector databases, embedding pipelines, feature stores
  • Streaming and CDC at production scale
